Imagine standing trial for a crime, being found not guilty, but being sentenced for that crime anyway. Sounds crazy, right?
But that is exactly what happened to as many as 2,000 Americans who are currently locked away in federal prison. At trial, a jury of their peers found them not guilty of some or most of thier charges, often the most serious, but they were given sentences far longer than their actual convictions warranted. The difference can be massive, with inmates receiving sentences often decades longer than they would have otherwise./
"Not Guilty" should mean "Not Guilty." No American should be sentenced for crimes for which they were acquitted.
The United States Sentencing Commission agrees. In April, they passed reforms unanimously barring Judges from sentencing defendants for acquitted conduct. It's now in the hands of Congress.
Tell Congress to End Sentencing for Acquitted Conduct. Justice demands it!
